Stories That Last the catalog becomes a road

A lasting catalog does more than preserve the past. It gives the next listener a place to enter. Stories: The John Elefante Collection gathers Kansas, Mastedon, and solo music into one carefully shaped journey through more than four decades of songs.

The continuing storyNineteen songs. Classic recordings. New versions. Personal photographs. One career told from beginning to end.

The collection welcomes longtime fans back while giving new listeners a clear first step into the full catalog.

Collection story

The career has a new entry point.

Stories: The John Elefante Collection brings together nineteen songs selected by John from the Kansas years, the Mastedon catalog, and his solo albums. The sequence begins with a newly recorded version of “Chasing Shadows,” moves through familiar songs and deeper cuts, and closes with the extended “This Is How The Story Goes.”

The result is not a simple greatest-hits package. It is a guided journey through the different rooms of the career: the arena voice, the harder Mastedon sound, the personal solo records, and the later songs of resilience and grace. Each track adds another piece to the same continuing story.

A legacy lasts when memory becomes invitation and the next listener is given a door to walk through.

Made for listeners, not only collectors

For longtime fans, the collection places songs from different eras beside one another and reveals the connections between them. “Play the Game Tonight” can stand next to “Taken Down Below,” “This Time,” or “Stronger Now,” allowing the listener to hear how John’s voice, writing, and convictions continued across changing musical settings.

For someone discovering the catalog for the first time, the collection answers the most important question: where should I begin? It offers recognizable Kansas songs, the weight of Mastedon, the intimacy of the solo albums, and a clear path toward the full records behind each selection.

The story inside the package

The physical editions extend the experience beyond the music. The two-disc CD includes a booklet with more than fifty photographs, many drawn from John’s personal collection, along with a career essay titled “This Is How The Story Goes.” A two-LP gold vinyl edition presents the collection as the kind of album experience meant to be opened, read, studied, and heard from beginning to end.

New recordings of “Chasing Shadows” and “Dust in the Wind” connect the present voice to the Kansas legacy, while the final track gives the collection room to close on a larger, progressive statement. The story looks back, but it does not end there. It keeps moving toward the next listen.

OpeningChasing Shadows

A newly recorded version returns to the Kansas era and immediately connects the collection’s past and present.

Classic eraKansas

“Play the Game Tonight” and “Fight Fire with Fire” anchor the voice many listeners first discovered in the early 1980s.

Heavy chapterMastedon

“Taken Down Below” and “Revolution of Mind” carry the larger guitars, layered vocals, and melodic power of the Elefante brothers’ rock project.

Solo witnessFaith, family, and grace

“This Time,” “Stronger Now,” and other solo selections bring the collection into its most personal and reflective territory.

FinaleThis Is How The Story Goes

The long closing piece gathers memory, musicianship, and testimony into a final statement that feels more like a new beginning.

A collection that opens the catalog

The best career collections do not replace the original albums. They lead listeners back to them. Stories is a map to the Kansas records, the Mastedon projects, the solo catalog, the videos, and the testimony behind the songs. The legacy lasts because the journey remains open.
